The Terminator franchise will continue to be explored in a whole new way with Netflix Terminator Zero anime series. But this new series is very much inspired by the original film by James Cameron.
The creator and showrunner of the series, Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, Batman II), previously revealed that the series will have the same kind of sci-fi-horror vibe as the original film.
He said: “There’s a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where the Terminator is synonymous with Jason and Freddy, where he’s this relentless serial killer. There’s a little bit of Friday the 13th in there. There’s a little bit of Michael Myers in there.”
Tomlin went on to talk about how the series is inspired by that original film during a panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. He also said that it would channel the “serial killer” vibes of the original 1984 film.
It was also revealed that the series will serve as a soft reboot of the franchise and is set immediately after Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
The series description reads: “2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an infinite army of machines. 1997: The artificial intelligence known as Skynet has gained self-awareness and begun its war against humanity.
“Trapped between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who is working to launch a new artificial intelligence system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity.
“As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by a relentless assassin from the future who will forever change the fate of his three children.”
It was also revealed that the Connor family is not part of the storyline. It will focus on all new characters.
The stars of the series Timothy Oliphant like Terminator, Rosary Dawson like Kokoro, “an advanced artificial intelligence and Japan’s answer to Skynet. If brought online, Kokoro will be equipped with the same power as Skynet.”
Anna Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, MASS) has joined the cast and will play The Prophet, “the philosophical guide of the human resistance, a light that guides the survivors in the darkness of the unknown future that awaits them.”
Other new cast members include André Holland (Moonlight, The Knick) as Malcolm Lee, “a brilliant computer programmer and father of three, plagued by prophetic nightmares about an apocalyptic future.”
Then, there is Sonia Mizuno (The Dragon’s House, Crazy Rich Asians), who will voice Eiko, “a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro.”
The series will debut on Netflix on August 29.
