Basil Iwanyk AND Erica Leeis Thunder Road, which produces the John Wick project, is collaborating with the executive of Screen Gems Scott Strauss to launch a new genre production label called Badlands.
The new label will develop feature films and they are planning to make two or three films a year. The first film they are developing is called Arachnid.
Arachnid is a spider-themed thriller that will feature the protagonist Matilda Lutz. The screenplay was written by Jayson Rothwell (Underworld: Blood Wars) and will be directed by Ángel Gómez (Voices).
Filming of the project will begin this July in Madrid. Altitude Film Sales will introduce the film to buyers in Cannes next week.
Lutz is best known for starring in projects such as Vendetta, Reptile, and upcoming films Magpie AND Sonja Rossain which he has the main role.
Recent Thunder Road projects include Monkey man, John Wick: Chapter 4 AND John Wick Prequel spin-off series The continental. The next ones are Dancer AND Greenland: migration.
Strauss said in a statement: “I am fortunate to be in business with Thunder Road and Renegade. Badlands will be an extension of both companies’ entrepreneurial spirit and is moving quickly to acquire and produce a new slate of horror IP.”
Erica Lee, partner and president of production at Thunder Road, added: “Thunder Road has been looking to expand into the horror space and we are thrilled to partner with someone as smart, creative and hard-working as Scott. His experience and track record speak for themselves, and our team is committed to making Badlands a success.”
