Sydney Sweeney has landed another big film project after his two recent successful films Anyone but you AND Immaculate.
The actress will star in a boxing biopic that will tell the story of pioneering boxer Christy Martin, and the film will be directed by David Michodknown for projects such as Oz, Animal Kingdom, AND The king.
The as-yet-untitled film “will tell the true story of Martin’s rise to become America’s most famous boxer in the 1990s: the ‘female Rocky.’
“A naturally gifted fighter, her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and then husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
“Her charisma, good looks and resilience in the ring have earned her a passionate fan base and inspired her to become welterweight champion. But behind the well-defined public persona, she faced personal demons, toxic relationships and a brutal attempt on her life.
Sweeney said in a statement: “I wrestled and kickedboxed from the ages of 12 to 19. I couldn’t wait to get back in the ring, train and transform my body. Christy’s story is not light, she is physically and emotionally demanding, there is a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”
She continued: “Christy Martin not only legitimized women’s boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought emotional, physical and financial abuse.
“I am passionate about the world of fighting, Christy’s story sheds light on her incredible rise to the top while showcasing the struggles for fame behind the scenes. I feel compelled to tell the story of a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t let it defeat her. She is powerful and exciting.
The director added: “I have a history of making films about damaged men and I wanted to make a film about a woman with a fierce energy within her.
“When I came across Christy Martin’s story two years ago I knew I had found it. Her ferocity is understandable and justifiable and audiences will desire it because of the circumstances she was forced to endure.”
He continued, “The film is about Christy as a young gay woman in a small town in West Virginia in the 1990s. She came from a relatively conservative family and wasn’t allowed to be who she was, so she used boxing as a vehicle to express herself and her anger.
“She had to make dangerous and fundamental compromises in her life, the most important of which was marrying an incredibly dangerous man.”
Producer producer Kohansky-Roberts he said: “David [Michôd] and I said this is a rock female. Making the cover of Sports Illustrated was hard enough, doing it as a boxer was amazing and paved the way for so many boxers and MMA fighters to come.”
Michôd added: “Sydney’s performance in Reality blew me away. She has been a fierce sportsman since she was a child and she has a taste for fighting games.
Of the Black Bear Teddy Schwarzmann said: “Black Bear is beyond excited to team up again with Sydney Sweeney, who is one of the most interesting and talented actors working today. We have also wanted to work with David Michôd for some time, and this material perfectly complements David’s incredible skills.
“Christy Martin’s story is epic and our film will deliver everything audiences expect and much, much more. We are thrilled to step in to finance the project and produce alongside our incredible partners.”
The film was written by Mirra Foulkes (Judy and Punch) and Michôd and the plan is to shoot it this fall. The actress is busy in Ron Howard’s star-studded thriller Eden and in Apple’s Echo Valley alongside Julianne Moore.
