Michael J. Fox she was one of the biggest stars of the 80s, protagonist of one of the biggest television programs, Family tiesas well as the largest film franchise, Back to the Future. He went on to have a great film and television career, and it all started as a talented teenager loved by the cameras and the fans who watched him. And Fox believes that was a time when it was much harder to become that famous.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Fox said that celebrities who rose to fame in the 1980s were much “tougher” than those who are now climbing the ranks of stardom thanks to social media.
“There’s an expression that I referenced when they gave me an honorary Academy Award: Someone told me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and becoming famous and they said ‘You’re famous in the ’80s. I thought, “Wow, that’s cool.” Famous from the 80s. That’s right, we were different. We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.
When asked if being famous in the ’80s was “harder” than it is now, Fox replied: “Well, you had to be talented. This helped. He continued:
“We would work our butts off, our acting muscles and watch other actors and sit with other actors and talk about acting and talk about it. And now there are people who just say, “Who’s your sweater?” What sweater are you wearing? And what’s that dance move?’ And you are the most famous person in the world.”
Fox hasn’t acted since 2020 because his Parkinson’s disease made it increasingly difficult to remember dialogue. Earlier this month she told Entertainment Tonight that she would consider returning to acting if the role was right.
