Robert De Niro he has had a crazy career as an actor and has played so many iconic characters throughout his career. The actor recently revealed that he was originally offered the role of Hannibal Lecter The silence of the lambs and also why things didn’t work out, as the part went well Anthony Hopkins.
While you are a guest In real time with Bill MaherMaher asked De Niro about some of his famous roles and if there were parts he missed in his career, and he responded:
“The only one I didn’t make… it took me so long to think of it as the famous movie that Anthony Hopkins ended up making. … It was with Jonathan Demme. … Yes, The Silence of the Lambs. I could have played that part.
“But I waited so long and I was thinking. I thought, “Just give me a little more.” She just threw it. …I don’t regret it. This is exactly what happened.
While I understand why De Niro was initially wanted for the role, Hopkins was the perfect actor to play this evil character and he proved he was right for the role when he won the Best Actor award. But at the time De Niro was one of the most bankable movie stars. The Silence of the Lambs was published in 1991, just a year later Those good guysand a few years later De Niro plays Al Capone the Untouchables.
While De Niro has no regrets about how things turned out, it’s definitely one of those fun “what if” casting decisions that almost was. It would have been interesting to see how De Niro would have brought Hannibal Lecter to life because he would have been very different from how Hopkins played him.
