In 2003, Chile’s Channel 13 was in operation George Lucas’ Star Wars movie and they had the crazy idea to put beer commercials in the movie! It was for Chile’s most popular beer brand, Cerveza Cristal, and that’s a very unconventional advertising plan.
For example, when Obi-Wan talks to Luke about his father, he says, “That reminds me. I have something for you.” In the film he stands up to take Anakin’s lightsaber, but in this version an ad showing Obi-Wan getting Luke a beer is cut! I’ve included all of these ads for you to watch below.
They didn’t have permission from Lucasfilm to do this, so as you can imagine, George Lucas wasn’t happy. So, in 2004, Lucas filed a complaint with the Chilean Council for Self-Regulation and Advertising Ethics.
As expected, the ruling was made in favor of Lucasfilm and it was ordered that these commercials no longer be broadcast. That didn’t stop them from appearing on YouTube though!
The brewing company has continued to incorporate its beer into other films such as American beauty, Gladiator AND Notting Hill. You will have so much fun with these!
