Only one month left until the release of the exciting new chapter in the Ghostbusters series, Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire. Not only will we see the original cast return to their roles, joining the new generation cast as they have before Ghostbusters: Afterlifebut we will also see ECTO-1 restored to its original state.
In Beyondlet’s see that of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) the family moves to his farm after his death, and his nephew discovers the old Ghostbusters vehicle decaying in a barn. He makes it work, but for the rest of the film he remains pretty dirty and beat up. When the original Ghostbusters appear at the end of the film to help Egon’s nephews, Winston (Ernie Hudson) sees ECTO-1 and promises to restore him to his original condition.
We know that the next film will be set in New York, in the firehouse used as the headquarters of the Ghostbusters, so this should be the perfect time to see the restored car. When asked in the next issue of Total Film what it was like to travel and even drive the classic movie memorabilia, the film’s stars Paul Rudd AND Carrie Coon he said it was “really exciting.”
Rudd said:
‘Putting on a Ghostbusters flight suit and driving the Ecto-1 was great fun. You know, there aren’t many of those vehicles around. It’s not like they built them new for this movie. It’s pretty crazy to think,’ This is the Ecto-1 from the original Ghostbusters and I can drive it.'”
He continued:
“You’re thinking, ‘Holy crap.’ You’re thinking, “Wait, I’m actually driving the Ecto-1. This is the greatest thing ever.’ But then you think, ‘Don’t crash.’ You feel the weight of that thing, both literally and metaphorically, so it’s exciting and interesting.”
Rudd wasn’t the only one impressed by the experience either, with Coon adding that the process isn’t always a relaxing journey.
“More than once we were stuck inside the Ecto-1 because something fell or broke. I know it’s a very enviable position to be inside that machine, but inside it we get beaten up. There are sharp edges. Everyone we get bruises. It’s not comfortable. You know, it’s like driving an old car, but it’s also very surreal. To be honest, I still can’t wrap my head around the idea of being inside the Ecto-1. Until I see the finished film with my own eyes, it feels like I’m living an 80s dream.”
Not much longer now! Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire will hit screens on March 29.
