REACHER star Alan Ritchson says he was a favorite for Marvel’s THOR – and explains why he missed it

Reacher star Alan Ritchson recently revealed a couple of big superhero roles he’s missed out on over the course of his career. He was in the running for the role of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in Nightwing Titans! But things didn’t go as he hoped.

I’m sure you all remember that Ritchson played Aquaman in a few episodes of Smallville, but after that there were some bigger opportunities he hoped to get. Thor’s role for Marvel was one of the greatest.

It turns out Ritchson was a favorite for Thor, but his attitude at the time didn’t do him any favors and probably cost him the role. He explained in an interview with Men’s Health:

“I didn’t take it seriously. I thought, ‘They’ll give me the part if I look like that guy; no one really cares about acting.'”

Marvel Studios ended up letting its team know that the role of Thor was his to lose, but he didn’t show “the craft.” What a strange attitude to have when going to an audition! You would think that an actor would come in prepared to showcase their talent and skills as an actor! I guess Ritchson learned a hard lesson there.

Chris Hemsworth he eventually got the part, and Ritchson was haunted by his mistake. In fact, he hired an acting teacher, The Shawshank Redemption‘S Debora Aquilato help him hone his skills.

Then when the opportunity comes to audition for Nightwing Titans arrived, the actor felt very confident in his abilities and thought he would be chosen. He explained:

“I was so confident. I thought, ‘This is the best damn audition I’ve ever had in my life. There’s no way they can do this show without me.'”

He was so confident that he went and bought a new Tesla, only to lose the role Brenton Thwaites after he was deemed too old. So that was another blow. However, he was later cast in the series as Hawk.

Then everything changed for Ritchson when he landed the role of Jack Reacher in the Prime Video series. He said: “I got about 50 offers the weekend after the first season Reacher opened [in 2022]. I knew my life had changed.”

So, even though things started out rocky for him, everything ended up working out for the actor, and he landed some really great roles.
