When fans booed the original ending of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, the creators looked to STAR WARS for inspiration

Last year Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse it was the middle film of a fan-favorite franchise, and although the film ended up being a critical and commercial success at the box office, its original ending left fans feeling less than impressed.

In a recent interview with Collider, Through the Spider-Verse directors Kemp’s powers, Joaquim Dos SantosAND Justin K. Thompson they talked about how a test screening reaction to the film’s original ending, which included the scene where Miles gets captured, forced them to add the ending we know now, where Gwen Stacy assembles a team of Spiders to rescue Miles. They were able to make this decision after reflecting on their favorite central film of the trilogy, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

Thompson explained:

“The ending… where Spider-Gwen goes out and gets Peter B. and Mayday and Peni and Noir and Ham together, and she kind of gets the band back together to go save Miles, and you’re full of hope and excitement that ‘Oh, they’re going to come back’….that wasn’t there until about six weeks before the end of the movie. We actually did a screening and it ended with Miles up for grabs, and everyone just said, ‘Boo!’ And we said, ‘Oh God, what are we going to do?’ We have to do something.’ We went back and quickly tried to understand and brainstorm and execute. We went back and watched The Empire Strikes Back again and asked ourselves, ‘How did The Empire Strikes Back do that?’ Oh, they finally gave you hope.'”

Thompson continued:

“Okay, we need our ‘Go Save Han’ moment. So we edited it, animated it, put it all together in six weeks and then screened it again. The audience went through the roof and we said, ‘Okay!’”

Added Powers:

“We had continuity in our minds, like we knew where the story was going to go. So we thought, “Okay, that’s good because we know where this is going to go.” It’s a cliffhanger for a reason. But we didn’t know, until we presented it to the public, what a snuff film would look like.”

The middle film of a trilogy has the difficult task of moving the story forward without revealing the ending. Across the Spider-Verse did a great job, along the same lines as The Empire strikes againand it will be amazing to see what happens when Spider-Man: Beyond Spider-Verse is released.
