Last year, the bodybuilder drama Dreams magazine was one of the most talked about films at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was a heavy and difficult to watch story about a man driven by his obsession with pushing his body beyond its limits to achieve bodybuilding stardom. Jonathan Majors gave an award-worthy performance, and the film was quickly purchased by Searchlight Pictures, Disney Studios’ independent label. The film was supposed to be released in theaters last December, but when news broke that Majors had been found guilty of assault and harassment, the film was pulled and dropped by the studio. This occurred when Majors was fired from Marvel, as well as the Dennis Rodman project he was assigned to.
Now the film is in trouble, back in the hands of the writer and director Elijah Bynum, which had a hit movie around this time last year. Searchlight Studios acquired the title last year from Park City for an estimated seven-figure sum; the film, 84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, was originally intended as a 2023 awards contender for Majors and Bynum.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see where this goes, but it’s a shame the director didn’t get the credit he was due.
