Leonardo Dicaprio AND Martin Scorsese we recently had a conversation with each other for Letterboxd and in that conversation it was revealed that the actor introduced the director Hayao MiyazakiStudio Ghibli films. DiCaprio said:
“I was asked what films I had introduced you to, but considering you’ve seen every film made up until 1980, it’s pretty hard to say. Apart from maybe Spirited Away – the Miyazaki films – and maybe Princess Mononoke.”
Scorsese then added, “It was The enchanted city you told me to look.” It’s better late than never to be introduced to Studio Ghibli films! Both Princess Mononoke AND The enchanted city they’re great films to start with, but I wonder if Scorsese went back and watched the rest of Miyazaki’s films.
DiCaprio has spoken about his love of Miyazaki’s work in the past, and he listed Princess Mononoke as one of his favorite films of all time in a 2010 interview with Esquire.
I love Miyazaki’s work and I’m happy he’s working on another film project!
