Just over a year ago, it was announced that MGM Studios was developing a Creed II spin-off films he would focus on Dolph Lundgrenof Ivan Drago and his son, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu). The film is titled Dragonand we haven’t received any updates on the project for a while.
Lundgren recently spoke with CinemaBlend, though, and shared that the project is still in the works, explains what’s going on, and even offers some story details. Lundgren previously shared that the script wasn’t ready and those involved were “waiting for a new writer to come in and try to shape it.”
The actor has now shared the success of Creed III it’s one of the main reasons why the Drago spinoff was put on the back burner. When asked if the project was still ongoing, he said:
“Yes, I think so. MGM was developing the script called Dragon about my character and my son. I think what happened was the studio changed leadership, and then Creed III did very well, so they started preparing for Creed IV. This happened last year, and then now there’s a problem with a co-star in Creed IV. The storyline they had in Drago’s script was interesting, it was kind of coming to America, a kind of immigration perspective, with me and my son, and it was really nice.
It makes sense that MGM would want to push Creed IV forward, and although Lundgren doesn’t mention who the co-star with the problems is, it’s very likely Jonathan Majorswho played Damian Anderson Creed III. With Creed IV’s status in question, perhaps they’ll bring attention back to it Dragon.
As for the story Drago will tell, the actor explained that it will see Ivan and Viktor moving to the U.S. post– Creed II. The two characters were last seen in the sequel training together in Ukraine, and they seemed to have a stronger relationship. As for what brings them to America, Lundgren explains:
“It just so happened that, in Creed II, we’re in Ukraine, in the beginning we’re in Kiev. That’s where the film opens, although it isn’t mentioned much. But in the version of the script that I read, it starts with a Russian invasion, and in that we go through some hard, difficult experiences that make us want to come to America. It was pretty interesting.
I would really love to see this Drago movie made, there is a very interesting story to be told with these characters. Let’s hope the studio can make it happen!
