Marvel’s Disney+ animated series What if…? just wrapped up its second season with nine solid episodes that were well received by fans. The show boasts the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of the year of anything in the Marvel wheelhouse, so the creators must have done something right this time. According to the head writer AC Bradleyit was the freedom given to them after toeing the line in season one.
In a recent interview with IGN, Bradley talked about Marvel Studios executives’ push to include “headliners” in the show’s first season, and what they were able to do in the second season with the “second leads.”
“With the first season, there was a push to use headliners, to do the Tony Stark episode, to do the Black Panther episode and Doctor Strange,” Bradley shared. “But with season two, we had a little more freedom. At the end of the day, we’re not writing the big $100 million blockbuster movie. We’re not even broadcasting the live-action TV shows. We’re the little show of scrappy animation that slips under the radar of the Marvel machines. So, it was really unconscious, but I think we veered towards the scrappy characters in season two. We started with the second elements, the underrated and overlooked ones, like Nebula. [Karen Gillan]Darcy [Kat Dennings]and Hela [Cate Blanchett].”
Both seasons were a lot of fun, but they seem to be hitting their stride this season. The show has been renewed for a third season, but unfortunately AC Bradley will not be returning to write it. In a recent X postrevealed his favorite episode of the season and explained that he’s moving on, although it appears to be under amicable circumstances, thankfully.
What were your favorite storylines this season? What would you like to see them explore in season three?
