Barbie director Greta Gerwig has signed on to tackle the beloved classic book series The Chronicles of Narnia on Netflix. Last summer it was officially announced that she would star in at least two films based on the story of the books by C.S. Lewisand was able to express some of his concern in tackling such a well-known and loved series.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4 Today, Gerwig spoke about both his love of stories and his fears, saying:
“I feel a bit of a state of terror because I really have a great reverence for Narnia. I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by this. It’s something he seems worth being intimidated by. Not being British, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it properly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and like maybe we should treat it with special care. He is not our compatriot ”.
Her nerves seem to suggest that she will come to the project with both the source material and the fans in mind, and it helps that she is one herself. Gerwig is a three-time (more than likely, soon five) Oscar-nominated writer and director, and it seems like everything she touches turns to gold, so I can’t wait to see her vision for Narnia, which is directed in production currently.
