JJ Abrams was developing a DC-centric movie Zatanna for a few years, but the project was shelved last year. Promising young woman writer and director Emerald fennel had written the film’s screenplay, but ultimately the studio didn’t want to move forward with the project.
Fennell recently spoke out about the script she wrote for Zatanna, saying it was “reasonably zany.” While guesting on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Fennell spoke about his experience working on the project and how he wasn’t very familiar with the superhero genre:
“I don’t know much about the superhero genre. It’s not a genre I naturally gravitate towards. I thought, ‘How do I make a movie like this for people like me, who maybe don’t know much and wouldn’t necessarily buy a ticket the first time?’ It was something like that and I thought, “Okay, that’s interesting.” Zatanna is just a really, really cool character.
“I think, just like everything, I wrote it down. It was complicated. It’s classic studio stuff, classic studio stuff. JJ is incredible, his team is incredible. In the end I wrote a screenplay that I think is reasonably zany. In a good way, I think. Ultimately, I think the whole universe changed.”
It certainly did! That all changed when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. Zatanna is a really cool and interesting character, though, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a movie centered around her.
Zatanna is a character known for her mastery of magic and her unique persona as a stage magician. She, the daughter of the powerful magician Giovanni Zatara, inherited a natural aptitude for the mystical arts. Zatanna’s defining characteristic is her ability to cast spells by pronouncing words and phrases backwards. She often finds herself at the center of supernatural adventures and frequently teams up with other heroes from the DC Universe, using her magical talents to battle supernatural threats and villains. Zatanna is not only a formidable sorceress but also a skilled detective, making her a multifaceted and dynamic character within the DC mythology.
