It seems True detective fans hoping to see the return of one of TV’s most iconic detective couples will be disappointed. While Matthew McConaughey he recently showed interest in revisiting his disturbing, philosophical role as Rust Cohle, his former partner in crime Woody Harrelson he is not interested in returning as Marty Hart.
During an appearance at the 3rd hour of TodayHarrelson was asked if he would ever consider returning to True detective alongside McConaughey. His response was short, clear, and a little heartbreaking for longtime fans:
“Matthew is so funny. In all honesty, never. Not a chance.”
When asked why he was so determined to stay away from another season, Harrelson explained that he’d rather not mess with what made that first season so special.
“Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out that way, and if anything, doing another season, I think, would overshadow everything.”
That first season of True detective it is still considered one of the most innovative shows on modern television. Its dark atmosphere, layered storytelling, and unforgettable performances from Harrelson and McConaughey raised the bar for everything that came after.
It’s hard to argue with Harrelson’s reasoning, the original story concluded perfectly, a rare case of TV lightning in a bottle.
Since that historic debut, True detective continued as an anthology series, introducing new clues and stories each season. The talent list was impressive, with names like Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Mahershala AliAND Jodie Foster everyone takes turns unraveling dark mysteries in their own corners of the True detective universe.
Now, there’s talk of another big name joining the fold Nicolas Cage it is said that he will be the next protagonist of the upcoming fifth season, set in New York State. Last month, McConaughey even gave it his seal of approval, saying:
“He’s a great actor and I’d love to see him in that world.”
So while fans may not get another round of Rust and Marty solving cryptic cases together, the future of the anthology still looks strong with new stars entering the darkness. It’s just a bit of a disappointment to know that half of the original duo has officially closed that door for good.
