John Travolta had a white Christmas this year and took his daughter Ella Bleu (23) and son Benjamin (13) on a skiing holiday

The 69-year-old actor took to Instagram on Christmas Day and shared a photo of the happy family together on the slopes.

“Merry Christmas everyone, we love you!!” Travolta said in the caption, while Ella Bleu shared the same photo on her IG with the caption, “Wishing everyone from our family to your family a Merry Christmas.”

The holiday trip came just a month after the Pulp Fiction star celebrated his son Benjamin’s 13th birthday.

It also came after the actor opened up about a near-death experience in 1992 that inspired him to star in the Disney Plus film The Shepherd.

An experienced pilot, Travolta first obtained his pilot’s license in 1976, although he recalled thinking he would not survive a flight in 1992 when the plane suffered a total blackout.

His experience mirrors that of young pilot Freddie Hooke (Ben Radcliffe), a young Royal Air Force pilot flying home across the North Sea for Christmas.

Suddenly, his de Havilland Vampire jet suffers a total blackout when he encounters a mysterious pilot (Travolta) who takes him to safety.

Travolta revealed that he wanted to take on the role because he could completely relate to the experience recounted in Frederick Forsyth’s 1975 novella on which the film is based.

I actually experienced a total blackout, not in a Vampire, but in a corporate jet over Washington DC. So when I read [Forsyth’s] When I read my book, it resonated even more because of this personal experience,” he said.

“I knew what it felt like to absolutely believe you were going to die. I had two good jet engines, but I had no instruments, no power, nothing. And I thought it was over,” he said.

The incident occurred on Thanksgiving Day 1992 when Travolta piloted a Gulfstream II from Florida to Maine to celebrate the holiday.

“And then, miraculously, we descended to a lower altitude according to the rules. I saw the monument in Washington DC and noticed that Washington National Airport was right next door and landed [Freddie] do in the movie,” Travolta said.

“So I read this book and said: ‘I lived with this. And of course I was young enough then that I could have played that role [of Freddie]. But I had to wait 30 years to play the shepherd,” he said.

He added that after his career got back on track after Pulp Fiction, he “made one movie after another” and then had no time for this project.

“After ten years I just gave up and decided I’d never really do it,” he said, although it was director Iain Softley who contacted Travolta and brought him back on board.

The 38-minute film was originally intended to be a feature film, but COVID delayed development even further before it became a short film.
