David Port she had roles in several television shows before entering the film business and has since played dozens of parts on the big and small screen. But he really became a household name when he took on the role of Jim Hopper in the hit Netflix series Stranger things. Since becoming the beloved character, Harbor has been able to land some bigger movie roles, and he hopes to hang on to that trajectory and leave behind the TV roles he once did. Stranger things concludes after this next and final season.
The actor told Variety:
“It’s a funny position I’m in that I never thought I’d be in. The first year of ‘Stranger Things,’ I remember having an argument with a publicist and she said, ‘Maybe you don’t want to be associated with the show. so much,” and I was like, ‘Why? I love this show. I love the character.’ And I love the show. And I love the character. But I don’t want to be just that character. I don’t want to be just that guy.
He went on to explain:
“I think about George Clooney leaving ‘ER’. Now we just see him as George Clooney,” Harbor continued. “But there was a time when he was, ‘The guy from ‘ER’ is making a movie with Nicole Kidman.’ I’m trying to navigate some of it, and it’s tricky because you don’t want to shit on people who love you for this thing you’ve done that you love too,” he concluded. “But at the same time, you kind of want to leave the nest. I have more inside me. I have different things inside of me, and I want you to notice it. I don’t want people yelling ‘Hopper’ in the street every five minutes for the rest of my life.”
I was ready to get mad at him for saying he wanted to distance himself from the role, but I completely understand what he’s saying. He has a way of saying things, he’s so captivating and he loves the role as much as we fans, so I respect that he’s ready to venture out and become a more experienced and well rounded actor.
