Marvel’s SPIDER-MAN 2 Devs Share New Venom Details: ‘We Wanted To Try Something Very Different’

Many fans were quite excited to see that Venom would be Marvel’s main villain Spider man 2. It has already been revealed that this version of Venom is not Eddie Brock and that the character was voiced by the Candyman star Tony Todd. We have no new details to share with you thanks to Insomniac Games senior creative director, Bryan Intihar. He offered some additional information during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Speaking about Todd’s casting for the role, he said:

“Everything we talked about [with] Venom – that sense of power, that sense of fear, that sense of overwhelm, so different from Peter – Tony fully embraces it in the performance. For us, Venom is host plus symbiote. You don’t get Venom without both tied together. What Tony represents is that bond. I think if anything, casting Tony made us feel more confident in the visual design of the character.”

Venom’s human host for the game has yet to be revealed, but he hints at Peter Parker’s involvement in how the new Venom is born, saying:

“We wanted to try something very different, and I don’t think you can be much more different to Doc Ock than you are to Venom. It’s about power, it’s about strength, it’s about being despised, it’s about Peter being much more involved in the creation of Venom. I think that’s what attracted us.”

It will be really interesting to see who hosts Venom. The fact that they’re keeping it under wraps tells me that he has to be another great character in the Spider-Man universe. It is then explained that Venom, being the anti-Spider-Man, is central to the design of him in Marvel’s Spider man 2. Jacinda Chew, senior art director at Insomniac Games, said:

“It’s really interesting when you start thinking about what makes it different from Spider-Man. The symbiote is often known as an allegory of the darkness the host is battling against. So what makes it an anti-Spider-Man?”

When it comes to talking about Venom, Chew said it was one of the challenges they had to understand:

“One of the challenges we faced during production was, how much does it cost [Venom] speak? I remember we did some concepts at the beginning [of] Does Venom have lips? Laugh? Is he smiling? Do you frown? There’s a fine line between making this creature scary and intimidating, but then also, I guess, relatable.”

I was a huge fan of the first Spider-Man game and am excited to see how this next chapter in the story plays out. I have no doubt Venom will be great. Wonder Spider man 2 will go on sale in October.
