The Rise of the Evil Dead has a pretty strong opening weekend at the box office and horror fans and fans of the franchise seem to like what the film has offered. I am a huge fan of the franchise and was extremely pleased with the gory and grotesque story and direction of Lee Cronin. He really helped take the franchise to the next level and opened up the universe in a horrible way.

During a recent interview with the New York Times, the stars of the film, Alyssa Sutherland AND Lily Sullivan, talked about the film and revealed that pleasing fans of the original film wasn’t one of their biggest concerns. Sutherland shared:

“I don’t think any of us were trying to please the fans. Having been a people pleaser for most of my life, it doesn’t really work. But we have a deep respect for the films that have come before. Lily and I have watched it again last night at a screening and we laughed the whole time. My laughs were embarrassing at times. But what Lee does so well is that he makes you laugh.

Sullivan added, “Laughter is medicine and blood is God in this film.” The whole creative team has really created something amazing with this movie and I’m very excited about what the future of the franchise looks like. Sam Raimi is already preparing that future with a evil Dead Bible that is creating and they are trying to develop a new film every two or three years. As for a sequel or prequel, Cronin shared his thoughts saying:

“I think everything is on the table at a time like this. My goal right now is to finish what has been an amazing promotional tour and a whirlwind of talking and sharing about the filmmaking process and my thoughts on it. And I think from there it’s like, let’s see how audiences really react. I definitely have stories that I feel like I can tell within this universe. But equally, I think as I’ve demonstrated with this, I’m also a filmmaker with my I’m not there to necessarily serve a continuous narrative all the time and I’ve probably made a film for me in terms of tastes that’s right on the edge, in terms of intensity, because I think if I push it further, it would become something that’s not me. or what I would like to do”.

He also shared his exciting idea for a prequel film:

“To me, really what it was driven by is the idea that force really can’t be destroyed. moving forward. So, that’s a path. There’s also, there’s a second storyline, a hundred years in the past that’s shared in this one. And this is also a storyline that I boiled over for what’s going on behind that vinyl. You could go back in time. Then I have a priest against a hundred Deadites. ‘John Wick Evil Dead.'”

Then, regarding a sequel, he said:

“Also there’s the 10 Minutes Later story for the ones who…the lucky ones who maybe make it out alive. There’s that place too. And then all the same, what about when the authorities show up at this building and find the carnage that’s there? And if you recall, there’s still some really hardcore remnants left in that building that could impact a whole new set of unsuspecting factors.”

I’m incredibly excited about the future of the franchise! Meanwhile, if you haven’t seen The Rise of the Evil Dead yet you should!
