Channing Tatum working on a ‘different’ remake of ‘Ghost’: ‘I think it needs to change a bit’

Channing Tatum still has one last dance to score. ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ will fire the stripper who remotely relied on his own experience as an exotic dancer, and there is no shortage of plans after that closure. He has “Project Artemis” and “Pussy Island” on the way, but as he dropped in a recent extensive interview with Vanity Fair, I would be willing to take time for the remake of ‘Ghost, beyond love’.

Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore starred in that early 90s romance where a recently murdered young man has returned in the form of a ghost to warn his beloved that she was in danger. Whoopi Goldberg rounded out the main cast in the skin of the medium who helps them both connect. The film had it all: romance, tragedy, comedy at the hands of Goldberg’s character, touches of thriller… crazy. Bruce Joel Rubin signed that impossible script to get the Oscar and he succeeded, not only in convincing the critics of its time, but in transcending it as the years passed, making the film one of the essential romantics. With this precedent, anyone would dare to repeat it, but Tatum was quite willing to take on such a task.

“We have rights”Tatum begins referring to his production company, the Free Association. “Yes, we have the rights to ‘Ghost’, but let’s do something different. I think it needs to change a little”. According to the aforementioned medium, in addition to being involved in the production, Tatum would try to embody the role Swayze played in the original.

Released in July 1990, ‘Ghost’ became a pop culture phenomenon, a blockbuster that grossed $500 million worldwide and not only won that Oscar for Rubin, but the award for Goldberg and three other nominations, including Best Picture.

At the age of 18, Channing Tatum started dancing, exploring that facet of a stripper which she reprized for 2012’s ‘Magic Mike’, a film directed by Steven Soderbergh which was inspired by her own experiences. ‘Magic Mike XXL’ was released three years later with a change of director (Gregory Jacobs) but keeping the screenwriter, who also returns to close the trilogy.

Soderbergh repeats the direction of ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’, written by Reid Carolin and with an exceptional co-star. Salma Hayek feels Tatum’s abs in the trailer, which teases steamy scenes for the couple. “She was one of my first crushes”Tatum comments on the experience of shooting sexy sequences with the actress. “But I have to say it’s almost like a comfort zone for me”he adds, alluding to all those years of striptease making him feel comfortable filming those moments.

* ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ is released in the USA on February 10, 2023 and in Spain does not yet have a scheduled release date.
