Last month, Nintendo launched Pokémon Scarlet And Purple Pokémon. These games launched the ninth generation of Pokémon games and that meant we had loads of brand new Pokémon to love and add to our collections. There are approximately 109 new Pokémon added to the games, bringing the total number of Pokémon up to a staggering 1,008!
I’m actually glad we no longer have the National Dex. As I’ve done for previous generations, I’m here to break down the newest additions into just numbers to determine which ones are best for a given stat. Keep in mind that Legendary Pokémon are disqualified, and these Pokémon may not be competitive, they’re only the ones with the highest stats (with maybe an exception here or there).
I’ll also ignore Tera-types because it’s another level of complexity and strategy.
HP: Cetitan
This Pokémon Land Whale looks pretty good if you ask me. His Ice typing isn’t the best, but he has the HP to help him stick. Also, if you have one with the Thick Fat ability, fire attacks will basically lose their super effectiveness. Sadly Cetitan’s defenses are quite poor, but his attack damage is decent, making him more of an ice cannon.
Recommended moves:
Rest: Equip Cetitan with a Chesto Berry and then you’ll heal, becoming a pian for your opponent, and you won’t lose any turns!
Earthquake: This is just a powerful Ground-type attack that will decimate those Fire, Rock, and Steel Pokémon.
Attack: Palafin (hero form)
The Pokémon Dolphin means business! It’s a bit tricky because you have to change your Palafin and then send it back. Thankfully, its Flip Turn attack makes it easier to do without sacrificing a turn. Pair it with a Pokémon that knows a move like U-Turn and you can facilitate the trade by keeping pressure on your opponent.
Recommended moves:
Reverse shift: This is a physical attack with STAB and facilitates transformation into Hero Form.
Wave Crash: Powerful STAB move that costs HP, but sometimes a hero has to make sacrifices.
Clearance: Decent STAB with a chance to lower your opponent’s Defense stat, hurting your follow-ups even more
Ice Fist: Take on pesky Grass-type Pokémon by hitting them with this attack
Defense: Great Fang
Our first Pokemon Paradox to be on the list! Great Tusk is the past version of Donphan and while Orthworm has a higher Defense stat, he doesn’t have any other good stats to back it up. Great Tusk has decent HP and attack stats to match his defense. His Protosynthesis ability also increases his highest stat if Sunny Day is active or if he has Booster Energy. With that push, Great Tusk definitely wins.
Recommended moves:
Sunny day: Not only does this trigger protosynthesis, but it also weakens water attacks that would otherwise do you heavy damage.
Megahorn: This is a strong move that can help wipe out Psychic Pokémon that pose a big threat to you.
Earthquake: This is really just a solid move overall and gets STAB.
Body print: Use that high defense offensively, plus STAB!
Special Attack: Iron Moth
Iron Moth is another Paradox Pokémon, this time for Volcarona. Its Special Attack is supported by a decent Special Defense and decent Speed. The Quark Drive ability increases his top stat by 30%, which can really make him a threat, but you need Electric Terrain or Booster Energy.
Recommended moves:
Electric ground: This move activates Quark Drive and prevents sleep. Using an Energy Booster is probably better though.
Energy sphere: This can be used to deal with Grass-types and possibly lower Special Defense for strong follow-ups.
Flamethrower/Fireburst: Strong moves with STAB. Fire Blast is stronger, but less accurate.
Mud wave: Powerful STAB with a chance to poison the enemy.
Special Defense: Flying Mane
The Paradox form of Misdreavous gets this spot on the list. You want to be careful because his HP and his defense are pretty pathetic, but his speed and his special attack are nothing to write home about. Like Great Tusk, Flutter man has the Protosynthesis ability which can give you a huge boost to your biggest stat. Special attack users will definitely have something to worry about when trying to take down this Pokémon.
Recommended moves:
Sunny day: This would be to activate protosynthesis and can be ignored if you equip Flutter Mane with a Booster Energy.
Mystical Fire: A decent attack that reduces your opponent’s special attack, plus if you’re using Sunny Day, it will be boosted.
Moonburst/Shadow Ball: Good STAB attacks that can lower an opponent’s stats.
Speed: Iron Beam
Iron Bundle is what I like to call Mecha Santa. It is a Paradox form for Delibird from the future, and like other futuristic Paradox Pokémon, it has the ability Quark Drive. Its Speed narrowly outpaces other Pokémon such as Flutter Mane and it has decent Defense and Special Attack stats. While I love the Iron Bundle’s overall design as a Santa-style Pokémon and would like to recommend Present, it’s not really a great move.
Recommended moves:
Electric ground: It will activate Quark Drive, although using Energy Booster is probably better.
freeze-dried: This is a decent STAB attack and is super effective against pesky Water-types without being too obvious like using an Electric Pokémon.
Ice Radius: Decent attack with STAB and potentially freezes an enemy.
