David Fincher2002 thriller Panic room it’s one of those movies that I stop and watch no matter what part of the movie it’s in. It’s perfectly balanced with relationships, tension, tight dialogue, drama, and the great camera shots that Fincher fans are used to seeing in his films. But it almost didn’t come together the way we know it.
The film originally starred the Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman in the lead role of Meg Altman, a recently divorced woman who has moved into a nice new house with her daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart). The house is equipped with a panic room, which mother and daughter must use when a group of men break into their house. With no way to call from the room, and Sarah having type 1 diabetes and needing access to her meds, everyone involved is on a clock that she is ticking.
Production on the film had begun, when 18 days later, Kidman re-injured her knee after injuring herself while filming Moulin Rouge! the year before. X-rays revealed that she now had suffered a hairline fracture and was told she had to stand up to heal, so Kidman had to drop out.
At the same time, winner of the Academy Award Jodie Foster became available because a film he was about to direct, ironically, had to be shut down when its leading lady, Russell Crowesuffered an injury.
She went into Kidman’s Panic room role with only a week to prepare, and she had to play it on a set that was designed for the much taller Kidman. She and she was pregnant! Big sweaters and some post-baby shooting got them around, though, and the rest is history. I love Nicole Kidman and I’m sure she was amazing in the movie but Foster was amazing and I love her portrayal of her so it all worked out.
