ZZ TOP: Raw (Shelter)
Verdict: back to boogie basics
Evaluation:
American rockers ZZ Top return to their roots in southern boogie and blues on their new album Raw, the soundtrack to the 2019 Netflix documentary That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.
The original trio’s latest recording is a poignant tribute to longtime bassist and co-singer Dusty Hill, who passed away last year after being part of an unchanged lineup for 51 years.

New music: ZZ Top revives its roots in southern boogie and blues on new album Raw: This is the soundtrack of the 2019 Netflix documentary That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.
Made in one day in an old Texas ballroom, the album features new versions of the band’s best songs.
ZZ Top is known for his chest-length beards, but behind his cartoonish images is a serious musical intent: a remake of Just Got Paid, originally from 1972, isn’t far from The Black Keys’ contemporary American.
Gimme All Your Loven’ and Legs blames Billy F. Gibbons’ beefy slide guitar rather than the new wave synthesizers that made these songs hits in the 1980s.
Elsewhere, there are celebrations of American wine (Thunderbird), the open road (I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide), and the radio blaster (Heard It On The X) on the Mexican border that inspired the band in their early days.
All in all, a loving goodbye to Dusty.

Album: The original trio’s latest recording is also a poignant tribute to longtime bassist and co-singer Dusty Hill, who passed away last year.
