This reference is almost unnoticeable.

Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus has unexpectedly become one of the most popular horror films of 2024. The film, about a group of teenagers trapped in an abandoned Renaissance station in the company of xenomorphs, was originally set to be released directly to the streaming service Hulu. But the director convinced producers of the necessity of a theatrical release.

And Alvarez was right. The film has already been collected $285 million with a budget of 80 million and viewers are calling ‘Romulus’ the best film in the franchise since James Cameron’s ‘Aliens.’

Fans especially liked that the director decided to start the film’s story from scratch, inventing new characters and new locations. And some viewers could still find references to previous films in the saga.

In the scene where Kay is locked alone with the xenomorph in the Renaissance dock, fans noticed a very familiar ship: the shuttle Narcissus, which Ellen Ripley used to escape from the Nostromo.

Yes, the heroine of the first “Aliens” was on the Renaissance station – Alvarez decided not to delve into the details of what Ripley did on the ship. However, fans are already beginning to suspect that the director used this “Easter Egg” as a teaser for the upcoming project.

Fans of the franchise are convinced that the next film in the Alien universe will be an adaptation of the novel Alien: Out of the Shadows, starring Sigourney Weaver. This book is set between the first and second film, 17 years after the events of Romulus, the protagonist is once again Ripley, who has just awakened from cryogenic sleep.

Of course, the Easter egg involving Ripley’s ship in Romulus doesn’t necessarily point to anything. Perhaps Alvarez just wanted to please fans of the series with this unexpected and well-hidden reference.

“Alien: Romulus” received from Russian viewers 7.2 points on Kinopoisk.
