You could say their mission was a failure.
Mission: Impossible has become one of the most successful and recognizable franchises in film history, and Tom Cruise is its constant face. Behind the scenes, however, there were many actors who were about to be part of this cult project, but fate decided otherwise.
Our list features 10 actors who, for various reasons, never made it into The Mission, despite having real chances. Among them are stars of all sizes, including even Lindsay Lohan, whose participation could freshen up this spy epic.

Perhaps the most interesting story here comes from Ian McKellen. When he was called to do “Mission,” they apparently only sent him the portion of the script that had scenes with his character. Not knowing the context, McKellen reasoned very simply: since he didn’t understand much of the film from the short scenes, he decided that “The Mission” wasn’t for him.
According to the actor, his agent was shocked when he heard that Ian was going to refuse to participate in ‘Mission: Impossible’. “You can’t just refuse to work with Tom Cruise!” he argued.
But McKellen was ruthless: his answer was the laconic “I think I can.” Interestingly, this was before his participation in “The Lord of the Rings,” and soon after this refusal he was first offered the role of Magneto, and then the legendary Gandalf in the film adaptation of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings.”
