Only Mikasa fits the bill, which is a shame for Levi.

Many anime have such a cool and complete plot that it is not a sin to make a movie about it. It is true that sometimes the result is such a nightmare that it would definitely be considered a sin in the movie world. This is what happened with the remake of the legendary ‘Attack on Titan’.

What’s wrong with the movie?

We won’t go too deep into the plot: it’s the same as in the manga itself. Humanity has been suffering from the invasion of the Titans for many years, and in order to finally live in peace, the main character Eren, together with his friends, must endure many trials. Whether they will succeed is another question, but let’s talk about the movie itself.

Looking ahead, it’s downright bad. It looks like it was filmed in the story’s own home country, so what happened? The film wasn’t saved by the abundance of blood, the onset of steampunk, or the humorous episodes with Sasha the Potato.

The characters are the most confusing. They went from well-thought-out and smart to pompous fools. Only Mikasa is more or less good, the rest are hugs and tears. A special pain is the character Shikishima. Don’t you remember this in manga and anime? Here we are too. And all because the writers decided to remove the audience’s favorite – Captain Levi, and replace him with Shikishima. Unfortunately, this is no longer the strongest person, but an optional decoration element.

Aside from the unconvincing acting, the CGI is downright terrible. And no, it’s not that the titans look realistic and scary. They look dumb, to say the least.

Despite the fact that the film as a whole looks surreal, the first part even beat “Minions” at the Japanese box office in 2015. Probably because the Japanese love this manga very much, and it is always interesting to see living heroes on the screen. But most viewers were left disappointed. On IMDb the film received only 5 points (however, it is not clear why so many), and on Kinopoisk – 4.5 points. If you are wondering whether to watch it or not, our answer is no.
