I found 5 Russian horror films that are even scarier than Hollywood films: Now I don’t leave the house at night

From the alien invasion to the vengeful Yakut ghosts.

The stereotype that very bad films are made in Russia did not arise from nowhere, but if you know where to look, you can unearth real diamonds. In recent years, no fewer than five blood-curdling horror films have been released in our country – and not everyone has seen them.

In 2020, Oksana Akinshina played the lead role in Sputnik, an inventive science fiction horror film about alien ‘guests’ landing on Earth. With a budget of 200 million rubles, the film grossed just over 300 million, and Western online platforms even bought the rights to show the film.

The late 1990s also saw some decent but little-known horror films being produced. Nikolai Lebedev’s debut film, which years later became ‘Legend No. 17’ recording, called ‘Snake Spring’, tells about the search for a maniac in a small, forgotten town. The atmosphere of the inevitability of death here is reminiscent of Stephen King’s films.

The Yakut horror film “Ichchi” was appreciated not only by Russians, but also by foreign critics. Director Kostas Marsaan successfully combined local folklore with modern horror trends, resulting in a horror film with shamanic rituals, spectacular mountain landscapes and an indescribable taste.

The mystical thriller “Ghoul” with Alexei Serebryakov also has its own flavor: daring, gangster, a la “Brother-2”. Cool soundtrack, charismatic main character, recognizable Russia of the late 90s and vampire chaos – the film turned out to be unusual and memorable.

The same can be said about “Touch” – a detective horror film from 1992, in which the investigation of mysterious suicides borders on the failed struggle of the main characters against bloodthirsty ghosts.
