But events turned out favorably for the star.
In September it was reported that Shakira would face trial. The foreign artist would be held accountable for refusing to pay taxes for a long time. But the meeting never took place.
The sentence of the celebrity, who lived in Spain for about two years but did not replenish the country’s coffers, was handed down on November 20. Initially, a heavier sentence was demanded for the singer who had serious run-ins with the law. The star faced eight years in prison and paying a fine of 23.8 million euros (about two billion 303 million rubles at the current exchange rate). All because she owed 14 and a half million euros (about a billion 350 million rubles).
But the artist managed to avoid such punishment. She made a deal with the authorities and commuted the sentence.
“The singer was sentenced to three years in prison, which she will not serve due to the lack of a criminal record, and to pay a fine of more than 7.3 million euros (about 700 million rubles – editor’s note) Shakira, who admitted to bringing the crime to justice, will not go to jail”– reported on El Mundo’s website.
