After an unprecedented summer of strikes, the effects will continue to be felt in the 2023-2024 awards season.
In a twist of the script, the WGA Awards will now take place on April 14 – just over a month after the Oscars. In a statement to Deadline, the WGA West and East pointed to their nearly five-month long industrial action as the cause of the dramatic change.
“The Writers Guild Awards will be held in April of this year to allow for a full awards submission process following the strike,” WGAW and WGAE said in a statement to Deadline. Check out the Guild’s full timeline below.
Also unusual is the fact that the nominations for the Writers Guild Awards will not be announced until February 21st, almost a month after the Oscar nominations are announced. So much for the Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay Oscar categories, which could potentially be affected by the WGA nominations. The 2023 WGA Awards were presented on March 5 — a week before the 95th annual Academy Awards. Everything everywhere at the same time And Women speak won the respective WGA trophies for original screenplay and adapted screenplay, and both won Academy Awards.
In other guilds, the SAG Awards were scheduled for Feb. 24 nearly six months ago, but that was about eight weeks before SAG-AFTRA struck the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Complications are likely to arise if the actors’ industrial action continues — especially since the 30th annual SAG Awards will be held on Netflix, one of the companies’ SAG-AFTRA champions. However, this date remains the same for now.
The DGA Awards remain scheduled for February 10th and the Producers Guild Awards will be presented approximately two weeks later on February 25th.
