Olivia Colman considered filming on-screen sex scenes with Micheal Ward in Empire of Light – and has spoken of the moment she found out her mother was five years her junior.

The 48-year-old actress and the 25-year-old Top Boy star shared some “slightly awkward” moments on set while discussing a new episode of The Graham Norton Show which airs on New Year’s Eve.

The 1917 romantic drama, directed by Sam Mendes, stars Olivia as film manager Hilary, who begins an affair with a ticket seller, Stephen, played by the much younger Micheal.

Olivia said of the intimate scenes: “There was a point where I sat on Micheal in a compromising and slightly embarrassing situation and he said, ‘Today is my mum’s birthday.’

Empire Of Light is a love story set in a beautiful old cinema on the south coast of England in the 1980s.

Filming on the project began in Margate in early February. The coastal town was brought back to the 1980s when builders redeveloped the area around Dreamland theme park.

The project was Sam’s first directorial effort on a film that he did not write with the help of a co-writer.

He produced the film with Pippa Harris through his Neal Street Productions and reunited with his old cinematographer Roger Deakins for the production.

Speaking about the highly-anticipated second series of Lane 5 and asked if his character’s accent (British pretending to be American) was a challenge, he said: “It actually gives you a sort of escape route. ” If you do something wrong and it doesn’t sound right, you always have an excuse for a deliberate mistake.

“I found it easier than doing house, it just had to be right.”

When asked about his son, whom he describes as “a real mature doctor,” and whether Hugh House influenced his career choices, he said: “No, I think he had to assert himself, even though he was surrounded by others .medical students were teased.”

Speaking about his new stand-up show, The Cynic, Romesh said: “Most of the Netflix shows are filmed at the Apollo, so I thought it would be fun to do it at my local theater in Crawley, which is like ‘ a recreation center looks like!”

When asked about his new series, The Romantic Getaway, he added: “I’ve written sitcoms that are very soft with funny scripts, but I’ve never written anything that’s so plot-driven – you want it to be funny, but you also want to take the lead in this curious story. It was great.’

He jokingly added: “Even though Katherine (Ryan), who’s a very good friend of mine, played couple, she made it clear from the start that there would be no touching – she was determined. To in fact, I think it was a deal breaker for them!’

When asked what kind of encouragement she gave the team before winning the European Championship, she said: “I was just playing music the whole time, so I let it speak for itself. I might have said something like, “Come on girls.” It was low key because everyone was ready. We gave our lives for this one moment, so why not go out there and enjoy it?’

Speaking of winning, she added: “It was everything I hoped for and more. I hope to never lose that feeling. I experience it over and over.’
