Olivia Colman considered filming on-screen sex scenes with Micheal Ward in Empire of Light – and has spoken of the moment she found out her mother was five years her junior.
The 48-year-old actress and the 25-year-old Top Boy star shared some “slightly awkward” moments on set while discussing a new episode of The Graham Norton Show which airs on New Year’s Eve.
The 1917 romantic drama, directed by Sam Mendes, stars Olivia as film manager Hilary, who begins an affair with a ticket seller, Stephen, played by the much younger Micheal.

Olivia said of the intimate scenes: “There was a point where I sat on Micheal in a compromising and slightly embarrassing situation and he said, ‘Today is my mum’s birthday.’
When he said she was 43, I was like, “OK, stop talking!”
Discussing the film further, when asked if her role was written specifically for her, Olivia said: “Apparently it was. But Sam is nice enough to say that anyway. He was watching The Crown at the time and thought of me

“We had a Zoom conversation during lockdown and I said ‘okay yes’ before I knew what it was. It is an incredible honor for him to write for me.’
He jokingly added: “Thank you it was a great piece – can you imagine if it was rubbish!”
Michael, who spoke about working with Olivia, said later on the show: “It’s been a great experience. It’s been amazing to share the same space. I’ve learned so much about being a real person – everyone has had a real sense of humanity.

“If Olivia was rude, I might have thought I had to be that way to achieve a certain level of success, but the fact that she’s so nice showed me that I can be a good person and still be successful .”
Empire Of Light is a love story set in a beautiful old cinema on the south coast of England in the 1980s.
Filming on the project began in Margate in early February. The coastal town was brought back to the 1980s when builders redeveloped the area around Dreamland theme park.

Happy: Discussing the film further, when asked if her role was written specifically for her, Olivia said: ‘Apparently she was, but Sam is so nice that he would say it anyway.
The project was Sam’s first directorial effort on a film that he did not write with the help of a co-writer.
He produced the film with Pippa Harris through his Neal Street Productions and reunited with his old cinematographer Roger Deakins for the production.
Speaking of film, Sam said in a statement: “I have long been an admirer of Searchlight and the dynamic way they have produced and released some of my favorite cinematic releases over the years.

“This project is very close to my heart and I couldn’t be happier that it has found its ideal home.”
Empire of Light hits theaters on December 9.
Elsewhere on the Graham Norton show, Hugh Laurie said he was very proud of his latest film, Romesh Ranganathan joked about working with Katherine Ryan, Leah Williamson said she was reliving England’s win, and cabaret star Callum Scott Howells and Madeline Brewer have live in the studio.
Speaking about his new film The Amazing Maurice, Hugh said: “I loved making it and the animation is amazing – it’s amazing and I look really good as a cat! The film is very funny and very charming. I’m very proud of that.”
Speaking about the highly-anticipated second series of Lane 5 and asked if his character’s accent (British pretending to be American) was a challenge, he said: “It actually gives you a sort of escape route. ” If you do something wrong and it doesn’t sound right, you always have an excuse for a deliberate mistake.
“I found it easier than doing house, it just had to be right.”
When asked about his son, whom he describes as “a real mature doctor,” and whether Hugh House influenced his career choices, he said: “No, I think he had to assert himself, even though he was surrounded by others .medical students were teased.”
“I am very, very proud of him. I’m a doctor’s son and also a doctor’s father, so I’m quite a ham between them!’

Speaking about his new stand-up show, The Cynic, Romesh said: “Most of the Netflix shows are filmed at the Apollo, so I thought it would be fun to do it at my local theater in Crawley, which is like ‘ a recreation center looks like!”
When asked about his new series, The Romantic Getaway, he added: “I’ve written sitcoms that are very soft with funny scripts, but I’ve never written anything that’s so plot-driven – you want it to be funny, but you also want to take the lead in this curious story. It was great.’
He jokingly added: “Even though Katherine (Ryan), who’s a very good friend of mine, played couple, she made it clear from the start that there would be no touching – she was determined. To in fact, I think it was a deal breaker for them!’
Leah also joined Graham for a chat.
When asked what kind of encouragement she gave the team before winning the European Championship, she said: “I was just playing music the whole time, so I let it speak for itself. I might have said something like, “Come on girls.” It was low key because everyone was ready. We gave our lives for this one moment, so why not go out there and enjoy it?’
Speaking of winning, she added: “It was everything I hoped for and more. I hope to never lose that feeling. I experience it over and over.’
Callum Scott Howells and Madeline Brewer performed Welcome and Don’t Tell Mama from the popular West End revival of Cabaret before chatting to Graham.
