People suffering from ulcerative colitis should avoid drinking coffee because the beverage can worsen their health, according to gastroenterologist Paulo Roberto Bertoletto.

Speaking to media outlet Terra, Bertoletto urged individuals diagnosed with the condition to give up coffee entirely. He explained that consuming coffee creates sudden urges to defecate and increases the overall frequency of toilet visits for patients.
The doctor highlighted that caffeine causes these issues by stimulating bowel motility. This intestinal acceleration can lead to severe physical discomfort, particularly during acute periods of disease flare-ups when the digestive tract is inflamed.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-term inflammation and ulcers along the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum. The condition leads to symptoms such as abdominal pain, stomach cramping, and frequent diarrhea, making careful dietary management essential for patients.
Impact of dairy and other foods
Turning to other popular beverages, Bertoletto noted that milk can also worsen the progression of ulcerative colitis. The medical specialist pointed out that the risk is particularly high for patients who have accompanying lactose intolerance, where consuming milk is fraught with diarrhea and abdominal bloating.
Lactose intolerance occurs when the digestive system produces insufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which is required to break down lactose, the primary sugar found in dairy products. In addition to dairy, the gastroenterologist added that spicy sauces, popcorn, and fried foods can also worsen health conditions for people with ulcerative colitis.
Dietary guidance on bananas
The warnings regarding coffee and digestive health follow previous dietary guidance issued by dietitian Nicole Dandrea-Russert regarding fruit intake. Dandrea-Russert previously stated that certain people have a poor tolerance for bananas and warned that individuals with kidney disease should not overindulge in the fruit.
Kidney disease impairs the body's ability to filter waste products and balance essential minerals in the bloodstream. Because bananas are rich in potassium, eating them in large quantities can pose health risks for individuals whose impaired kidneys cannot filter excess potassium efficiently.
