Maia Mitchell left “Good Trouble” after 4 seasons at the end of the episode on March 16. The show’s EP spoke EXCLUSIVELY to HL about the reasons behind Maia’s departure, Callie’s future, and Jallie’s “endgame”.
De Coterie was rocked by a major release on March 16. good problems† Callie got a job at the ACLU in Washington DC and left Los Angeles to begin the next chapter of her life. The episode was filled with emotional and tearful goodbyes, especially between Callie and Mariana.
HollywoodLife I ONLY spoke to the executive producer Giovanna Johnson related to by Maia Mitchell shocking departure in season four. Joanna stressed that she “fully supports and understands Maia’s decision to leave.” She also talked about the final moment of Callie and Jamie’s “romantic comedy” and what it means for Jallie’s Chargers. Obviously this is a big change. How far in advance did you know that Maia wanted to go back to Australia and leave the show?
Giovanna Johnson: I knew that last season. I knew it could happen last year, but you never know. People say. Towards the end of season three, I went up to him and said, “I really want you to stay. How do you feel? “And he said, “I love this show. I love this family. I love this character. And it’s hard for me to say that I just need to go home and need some time.” I think he should see what the next chapter of his life will be. She’s been playing this character since she was 18-19, it was incredible to see her grow up to be the most beautiful, professional and talented woman. i had to do this i support it one hundred percent sad about it still sad about the end fans† I haven’t gotten over it yet. It took me a while to accept that. I fully understand and support. he is cierra [Ramirez] they are like girls to me. I’ve seen them grow and I love them so much. People may say that but they really are the nicest and sweetest people to work with and they are so talented. You can write anything for them and they will elevate everything. All make it so much better than what it says on the page. It was really hard but I told him, “Stay and do the first episodes of Season 4 because I want to give you a real episode. I want there to be an episode dedicated to Callie’s departure”. “Absolutely,” she said. One hundred percent. I want it to be fantastic”. She came back from australia and did those parts for us, so I’ve known that for a while. I survived the blast in tears and I have to say I’m very excited to continue writing for this amazing cast We have such an amazing cast It’s not like losing one person and the show is falling apart Everyone is so talented We still have Cierra as a Fearless cast leader but it’s all staged. Right. It’s not like we don’t have 10 other people to write to which is great. I’m really excited about the new people we’re bringing in this season. Even though Maia misses her so much, I feel like the show is stronger than ever. I’m really excited, I’m not just saying this to keep the fans away, I’m proud of the episodes and excited for them.
It looked like you and Callie were heading in that direction, especially at the end of last season. A life change was almost inevitable.
Giovanna Johnson: Yes, of course we knew you were leaving. In many ways, I specifically wrote to both Callie and Maia the fantastic scene where she is on the podium and Wilson speaks to her. I knew you would come to him. As she read at the table, her voice was hoarse and she began to cry. Then I started crying. We could barely read the rest of the painting as it was so exciting to know it was coming.
Get a job at the ACLU in Washington, which is great Callie. He had always wanted to do something like this. Were there any other ways of writing you were considering?
Giovanna Johnson: No, it would always be like this. We always want to keep the door open. People are coming back in our show. It’s still in our Fosters program, and a character is never killed. It’s funny because our costume designer was like, “Well, are we done with that character? Can I get out of their lockers?” I always say: “I don’t leave anything. You never know. “Of course we wanted to keep the door open and that’s how we always did it.

Will we get updates on it throughout the season?
Absolute. It means it has not been forgotten. He is still a real being. I still feel like Maia is and always will be a part of this show and this team.
You know I’m a big Jallie fan. The end of the episode is a clear win for Jallie’s Chargers. How should fans feel about Callie and Jamie’s last moment on the plane?
Giovanna Johnson: This is so interesting. when we bring Beautiful [Mirchoff] as Brandon’s wife’s brother for the final episodes fansthere was no plan to really move that character forward good problems† But then we got the idea to include it and the chemistry they had was just amazing. I love Beau so much that we had to make him a part of his life and part of the show. I think most of us felt it was an endgame. As much as we love Callie and Gael, there’s something about her and Jamie that just feels right. We just needed to have a happy ending on the plane. It’s a very romantic comedy but I felt we had to send it with something really hopeful.
Are we going to find out if they get back together or do we have to assume they are or will they?
Giovanna Johnson: This is not our last news from them.

How will Mariana deal with Callie’s absence in the near future?
Giovanna Johnson: When we look at it, it’s like the five stages of pain. First you get some denial, then you get angry, then you negotiate, and then you get into all the other phases. We definitely do with Mariana. I think he was really trying to be supportive and positive but in the last scene of the episode you see Callie crying as she takes her baby and it won’t be easy for her. He trusted Callie a lot. While taking care of Callie and Jude, they shared a room and then went to college, but have been living together for a while. It’s hard not seeing your sibling every day and not having that support system. But luckily Mariana has the support of everyone at The Coterie. I also loved the moment after saying goodbye to Callie, when she got into the elevator and everyone was waiting there.
You said the door was open for Maia to return. Does he appear in the story or does he want to come back?
Giovanna Johnson: I think it really depends on where you are and what happens next, but the door is always 100% open. It’s part of the show. She is part of this family and we wish her to come back for all we can.
