Rare gemstones found in Russia, one of the largest in history

A gem-quality diamond weighing 340.02 carats was mined at the Vladimir Grib mining and processing plant in the Arkhangelsk region. This gemstone became the largest in the history of industrial mining of the deposit and is among the five largest diamonds found in modern Russia.

The dimensions of the crystal are impressive – 50 x 39.4 x 24.8 millimeters. According to preliminary classification, experts classified it as a rare category, distinguished by extraordinary purity and high transparency. Such stones account for only 2% of the total number of natural diamonds, making the find particularly valuable.

Mikhail Bakov, General Director of the AGD Diamonds company, emphasized that not only the size but also the quality of the stone is amazing: “It has almost no cracks or internal defects, which makes the diamond especially in demand in the market.” He also noted that the extraction of such a crystal was the result of the coordinated work of a large team of professionals.

This is the second large diamond weighing more than 50 carats extracted from the Vladimir Grib deposit this year. A total of 49 unique stones have been seized since 2013, when the mineral deposit began to be developed. Success in mining is associated with the use of modern, highly efficient technologies that make it possible to more accurately detect diamonds in ore.

For comparison, the world’s largest diamond is the famous “Cullinan” or “African Star” found in South Africa in 1905. It weighed an impressive 3,106 carats and remains the benchmark for gemstones to this day. A new find in the Arkhangelsk region confirms that Russia remains one of the leading players in the global diamond market.
