Based on a true story (Arte): The terrible fate of Philomena Lee, a sacrificed mother

In 2013, Philomena, a film by Stephen Frears, was released, chronicling the drama of an Irish mother-daughter who gives birth in a convent and whose son is adopted against her will. This documentary tells this terrifying story.

CONTEXT

One country, Ireland. Catholicism is the state religion there. A woman should be an excellent housewife as stated in the Constitution. Fallen women (fallen women), those who are “failed” according to the authorities, are secluded in monastic centers where they work as laundries without pay while nuns raise their children…

RESULTS

On December 18, 1955, Philomena’s son, Anthony, was adopted by an American family and went to the United States. The mother cannot oppose it. Much later, Philomena will discover that, like her son, 2100 children have been sold to America, literally.

AND TODAY ?

According to the doctor, 10,000 Irish women passed through these centers between 1922, when the last laundromat was closed, and 1996. Philomena Lee, 89, continues to campaign for her story and other fallen women to be known. His son, Anthony, died in 1995 without ever seeing him again.
