McKinnon and Gerwig appeared on screen and hugged to introduce Eilish, who was standing in the background.
Eilish’s performance included a montage of home videos and unpublished photographs of female artists past and present. The tribute was an ode to the emotional scene in the Barbie Film in which Eilish’s song appears.
Eilish is no stranger SNL; This appearance is her third appearance on the NBC late night show. In 2021, the Oscar and Grammy winner served double time as presenter and musical guest.
“What am I made for?” was co-written by Eilish and her brother Finneas. The song has already won the “Favorite Movie Song” category at the Billboard Music Awards. In addition, the song received five Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
