Even those Saturday Night Live Writers can’t stop thinking about the Roman Empire.
The sketch show tapped into a viral TikTok trend in which users, with the help of host Jason Momoa, ask the men in their lives how often they think of the Roman Empire.
The sketch opens with Momoa sitting forlornly on a bed as his partner sings behind him, wondering what’s on his mind.
Along with Kenan Thompson and Mikey Day, whose partners also want to know what’s going on in their husbands’ heads. Fortunately, the answer is much simpler than you might have thought. In their minds they rave about ancient Rome and all its achievements.
“Roman Empire! Ancient Rome! It jumps in my dome five times a day,” Momoa sings in full gladiator armor. “It reminds me that they invented the dome. I guess that’s just one of the reasons I know Rome.”
The Roman Empire trend has been circulating online for a few months now, but it makes perfect sense why SNL I’ll wait for someone like Momoa to try it. With his beard and shiny golden armor, the actor seems to fit right in.
The sketch also tries to think about what women and children also think about. Consequently SNL, The ladies are constantly thinking about astrology (which Momoa says the Romans had a hand in), while the kids are about dinosaurs.
