No, the prolific musician didn’t show up (although Jenny McCarthy said he was watching). Instead, four contestants honored John with their song choices. But first, Robin Thicke kicked things off with a rousing rendition of “Tiny Dancer.”
Contestants ran through John’s hits like “Bennie and The Jets” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” But none were as fitting as Royal Hen’s choice, “Philadelphia Freedom.”
You see, under the mask was none other than Billie Jean King, for whom John wrote this song.
The song’s lyrics are named after their tennis team and are meant to honor John’s admiration for King after the two formed a strong bond through their philanthropy.
“I just feel like there’s a legend under that mask,” Ken Jeong said after King’s performance, before her identity was revealed. Moments later, King gave the jurors a pretty big clue: She received the Presidential Medal of Freeform from former President Obama.
Anyone who has followed King’s legacy might have guessed that she was the royal hen even before her rendition of “Philadelphia Freedom.” Earlier in the episode, her cues section hinted at several big moments in her career, including the fact that 90 million people tuned in to see her defeat Bobby Riggs in the 1973 Battle of the Sexes tennis match.
In addition to several tributes to her decades of work for equality, the inclusion of a coin with a football on it may have brought back memories of her helping with the coin toss as an honorary captain at Super Bowl LVI last year. The Eiffel Tower statue was certainly a tribute to French President Emmanuel Macron, who awarded it the Legion of Honor.
Jeong was the only judge to guess correctly, even after that last clue. Other female icons included Gloria Steinem and Rita Moreno. All the judges and the audience were completely amazed to see such a legend The masked singer Phase. She could be one of their biggest contenders yet.
