This is a never ending case. The Football League held awareness raising actions on the occasion of the fight against homophobia on Saturday, May 14th. Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 players especially wore special jerseys bearing the colors of the rainbow, which is the symbol of the fight against homophobia. It’s a jersey midfielder Idrisa Gueye doesn’t want to wear. Since then, institutions or individuals have sought clarification from the former Everton player accused of homophobia.
But this Tuesday, May 17, the 32-year-old received heavy support. Indeed, the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, confirmed his support for his fellow countryman and asked: “respect for their religious beliefs”. As a reminder, homosexuality is prohibited and punished in Senegal. “Everyone who engages in an immoral or unnatural act with a person of his or her gender is imprisoned for one to five years and a fine of 100,000 to 1,500,000 francs”.
In France, the case has transcended the football world. Political figures such as Valérie Pécresse, president of the Ile-de-France region, condemned Idrisa Gueye’s move and demanded sanctions against the actress. PSG also left the midfielder on Monday evening. Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu, for her part, evaluated the Senegalese international’s decision not to wear the rainbow jersey “sad”.
