During the study, scientists evaluated various signs of addiction in pets. 105 dogs of different breeds participated in the experiment. Researchers observed the animals’ reactions when playing with their owners, when playing independently, and when toys were put away in a box.

One in three pets showed clear signs of addiction. The dogs could not tear themselves away from the toys and whined and barked constantly. Scientists have also noted that some animals tear through boxes to get to toys.

According to researchers, interaction with toys helps dogs realize their natural instincts, but pets’ play habits need to be monitored.

“Such behavior is not a pathology per se, any more than gambling or computer games are in humans. However, such highly rewarding activities have the potential to become compulsive in humans, and the same is true for dogs,” the study authors say.

By the way, scientists have previously found that dogs can recognize human emotions. Read more in our material.
