The Bachelor Recap: Zach wants to find love in Budapest, but has to make tough eliminations before heading to his hometown

SPOILERS WARNING! This post contains details of Season 27 Episode 7 of ABC The old bachelor.

It’s home week and the pressure is on.

Zach and the other seven women are in Budapest for this week’s episode The old bachelor. Due to last week’s events, all women this week have a lot of confidence in their relationship with Zach. They are excited to see him in this new city.

As always, Zach has a quick chat with host Jesse Palmer before meeting the women. He learns that Greer, who has been quarantined after being suspected of contracting COVID, is on his way to Budapest to join the group. But Zach says he’s worried if their bond will last since he lost so much time with her and continued to build strong relationships with the others.

Kaity gets the first one-on-one of the week, which means she’s the first in the group to get a second one-on-one with Zach. Her date card says “Let’s fall in love in Budapest,” so it sounds like Zach is pretty serious about the women staying.

Kaity meets Zach in town and the two take a cable car up a mountainside where they have a beautiful view of the city. As they enjoy the view, Zach tells Kaity that he would like to know more about her when they move to her hometown and asks her to share more small details about herself. He discovers that her favorite color is purple, and in return he tells her that he recently learned he is 80% British. They continue to explore the city and eventually come across a typewriter on which they write each other poetry. Kaity says in a confessional that she thinks she’s falling for Zach, but is afraid to tell him.

Back at the hotel, the other women talk about their concern about where they are in the process. As hometown approaches, all the women try to figure out where they stand with Zach – and Greer, returning from her break, shakes things up as well. Some women don’t think it’s fair for Greer to come back and get a rose when she wasn’t around to continue her relationship with Zach.

The next date card comes in and Ariel, Charity, Gabi and Kat are chosen for the group date. That means Brooklyn gets the second one-on-one of the week, last for hometowns. Once again, Kat is very upset that Zach didn’t choose her, but given her previous argument with Brooklyn about stealing someone’s moment, she decides to wish Brooklyn nothing but the best.

During their date’s dinner, Kaity says she’s looking for stability in a man, something she’s never felt before. She tells Zach that she feels safe with him and that she thinks he would be a great man. She adds that Zach will not meet her father when she reaches her hometown because he is not in the picture. When he showed interest in dating her and her brother, she felt it was too late. The man her mother remarried became like a father figure to her for years until he also left. She tells Zach that it was hard to lose two father figures, and Zach comforts her, telling her that he admires the strength it took to share that with him. He offers her a rose.

On the group date, the women are eager for a rose to make sure they make it to the birth place. They meet Zach at a theater where they are drawn into some kind of magic. Apparently, a small red heart was drawn on Zach’s hand. The wizard “took” the heart and gave it to the person Zach had the strongest bond with, which ended up being Gabi.

Now the magician tells them that he will read their minds. They take turns sitting in front of Zach and answering questions about themselves and their relationship with Zach. Things take a turn when Charity admits her previous relationship failed due to infidelity and she still hasn’t fully healed from it. Kat then says she considered leaving the process, even though she thinks she’s the right person for Zach.

Emotions run high when they see Zach later at the group’s cocktail party. In as little as four weeks, one of them could be engaged to Zach, and the mentalist’s questions definitely confused them all. Zach comes and demands honesty and vulnerability from each of them.

Ariel goes first and tells him that she has a loving family, but she is looking for love outside of them. She says it’s hard for her to be vulnerable, but Zach makes it easy for her. When Zach talks to Charity, she tells him that the group date was difficult for her. She says she hasn’t always trusted her own decisions and hasn’t forgiven herself for staying in her previous relationship, but assures Zach that she’s ready for a new relationship with him.

Gabi admits she feels insecure after the mentalist told her she “confuses people,” and worries that Zach won’t accept her for who she is. He assures her that he enjoys being with her and that he wants to continue getting to know her. Kat gets a chance to explain herself after looking uncertain for the first part of the day. She says it was hard and she never wanted to leave It but wasn’t sure if she could go through the process. Zach tells her that he doesn’t take an engagement lightly and that she should let him know if she has any doubts. But she insists that she has no doubts about her relationship with him, which seems to smooth things over.

Gabi gets a group date with Rose and assures her that he is ready to meet her family.

The other women are clearly sad that they didn’t get the rose, but they try to put on a brave face for Gabi so as not to spoil her moment.

It’s Brooklyn date time, and Zach says he’s excited to find out where their connection leads. But before he can leave for his one-on-one interview, Greer wants to talk to him. It’s been almost three weeks since they saw what was inside The old bachelor World is essentially a lifetime. Greer says she’s ready to pick up where they left off, but Zach tells her he’s not sure if there’s anything left for him, so he’s sending her home.

Zach meets up with Brooklyn to ride across town to a hot air balloon. As they “take their love to new heights,” as Brooklyn put it, the other women return to the hotel. Charity says she’s confident Brooklyn will return with a rose, meaning there’s only one rose left to give out to the hometown. Kat says she’s jealous that Brooklyn is on a date with Zach and is worried about getting the rose.

After their hot air balloon ride, Zach and Brooklyn take a trip to a bathhouse where they chat with a couple who have been together for 25 years. This gets them talking about their own future together, and Brooklyn says she’s excited about Zach possibly meeting her family. At dinner they deepen their conversation. Brooklyn had already told Zach that her father didn’t raise her so he wouldn’t meet her father in her hometown. However, he would meet her grandfather, who she says is her hero. She admits she’s scared to introduce anyone new to the family, but she really sees a future with Zach.

Zach stepped away from the table to think. He gets emotional during a confession and says that after hearing how important her family is to her, if he’s not 100% sure about their relationship, he’s not sure if he’s worth dating her . He tells her he can’t give her the rose and sends her home.

The women are visibly shocked to see Brooklyn’s bags taken from the hotel and are all nervous as they head to the rose ceremony. Zach knows someone will be sad by the end of the ceremony.

There is no cocktail party this week. Zach hands out roses to Charity and Ariel. Cat is sent home.
The old bachelor airs Monday nights at 8pm ET/PT on ABC and is available the following day on Hulu.
