Following the critical acclaim of the first season, BBC is moving forward with a second season The tourist with Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald set to return. Commissioned by the BBC in association with Stan and ZDF, the six-part thriller was created and written by Jack and Harry Williams and produced by award-winning Two Brothers Pictures in association with All3Media International. Filming begins in April.
“I’m incredibly excited to continue the story The tourist. Harry and Jack Williams are brilliant writers and I can’t wait for audiences to see how well Ireland and his characters are used to deceive them as the story progresses,” said Dornan.
The unconventional thriller, which opened to 12 million viewers in January 2022 and retains the title of the most-watched series on BBC iPlayer, will continue the same dark comedy that has captivated viewers from the start.
“The tourist was unlike anything we’ve written before, and we’re very grateful for the incredible response to the first series. It’s been an exciting journey to return to this world of the quirky characters that were so loved and to see where we can take them next as we continue to deliver sonically unique and unconventional drama,” said Jack and Harry Williams .
Dornan will also serve as executive producer.
The couple decide it’s finally time for Elliot to rediscover his roots after the car accident that left him with severe memory loss and find themselves drawn into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life. As Elliot battles his own demons, Helen must pick up the pieces of a larger puzzle; forcing them both to face enemies old and new.
“Series two of The tourist will surprise and entertain viewers in the same way that the first successfully did. We are confident that this series will appeal to wide audiences with the comedy embedded in its dark and suspenseful story, and we look forward to exploring it in a different setting,” said Sarah Hammond and Daniel Walker, the directors of Two Brothers, said.
A true international hit, the first series to sell across five continents, with the show stretching from South Korea to Scandinavia. The series won three Golden Nymphs awards at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, including Best Series, the festival’s top honor.
“I’m so excited to work with Jamie again and to return for another wild adventure with an incredible cast and crew. Jack and Harry Williams are brilliant storytellers and it’s exciting to see what they come up with next ,” Macdonald said.
The tourist Series 2 is produced by Two Brothers Pictures (an All3Media company) for the BBC in association with Stan and ZDF and was created and written by Harry and Jack Williams who are executive producers on Two with Dornan, Walker and Hammond Brothers Pictures, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC. Alex Mercer will also produce, with Fergus O’Brien directing the opening block. International distribution is via All3media international.
Before the first season of the tourist, Dornan received some of the best reviews of his career in the Oscar-winning film Belfast. He will next be seen in the spy thriller heart of stone with Gal Gadot, which will appear on Netflix later this year.
