Sarah Polley was practically born into this industry, starting out as a child actress at the age of 5 and rising to fame soon after, she is now at home behind the camera as a writer and director. her latest foray into film women talk received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and a screenplay adapted for her, based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews. This is Polley’s second nomination in the screenplay category for her directorial debut in 2006 away from her with Julie Christie, the legendary star who actually worked in front of the camera with Sarah as an actor in a number of films.
Polley’s successful acting career also includes The Sweet Afterlife, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Go, My Life Without Me, Guinevere, John Adams, The Weight of Water and Zack Snyders dawn of death, but now she is as successful as a filmmaker who also directed in 2011 Take this waltz and that from 2012 stories we tell.
She joins me today in my Behind the Lens Deadline video series to talk about what her Oscar nomination means to her, why she spends so much time between films, her disappointment that in a really good year like this, no nomination for best director was not, plus the unique style she brought to the making of women talk and cast of this remarkable ensemble.
