New horror movie debuts on Halloween with record-low box office

Universal/Blumhouse says Telephone Black 2 grossed $61 million domestically, according to Deadline. Despite its leading position, the weak performance was part of an overall decline in the film industry: October was the weakest month in 27 years, with total grosses of approximately $440 million. Analysts say one reason for this is that Halloween falling on a Friday and the final games of the Major League Baseball World Series draws audiences away from movie theaters.

The second place was taken by the art film “Bugonia” starring Emma Stone, which grossed $4.4 million. Yorgos Lanthimos’s film had the director’s best start in wide release, and audiences gave it a B Cinemascore with 80% positive reviews. Audiences from the east and west coasts of the United States were particularly interested in Bugonia, where ticket sales accounted for 51% of the film’s total gross.

Movie distributors say “Black Phone 2” and “Bugonia” continue to compete for audience attention amid limited blockbuster releases and a busy weekend schedule. Continuation of collections is expected to depend on holiday screenings and the increase in the number of movie theaters showing movies.
