TV Academy announced a new Emmy category and jury award for Emerging Media Programming on Tuesday. It also revised the rules for submitting documentaries.
The new category and jury prize is the result of the reorganization of the Emerging Media Programming Peer Group (formerly Interactive Media Peer Group). It represents professionals from across the industry who create or influence new media content such as interactive storytelling using virtual, alternative, mixed or augmented reality; viewer-driven stories, storylines and content consumption sequences; and multiplatform and/or metaverse storytelling.
The new jury prize recognizes outstanding innovations in emerging media programming. It goes to producers, companies and/or individuals responsible for creating groundbreaking emerging media programs that demonstrate technical or narrative innovations and significantly elevate audience viewing experiences beyond traditional linear TV programming.
The new category is Outstanding Emerging Media Program, which is awarded to producers, companies and/or individuals responsible for creating emerging media programs related to an existing linear television program or series or one that is entirely original. The award recognizes content that is central and fundamental to the work itself, demonstrating creative excellence by taking the audience’s viewing experience beyond traditional linear programming.
As for documentary program submissions, those that appear on the AMPAS viewing platform but did not receive an Oscar nomination may still be eligible for Emmy consideration. This will certainly (with any luck) increase the number of documents submitted, which have been low in the past.
