Linda Hamilton (Terminator: Dark Fate): "What a pleasure it is to portray Sarah Connor again with my wrinkles and gray hair!"

Twenty-eight years after Terminator 2, Linda Hamilton finds the character of Sarah Connor and she does some great tricks herself.

What convinced you to return to the Terminator saga?

Linda Hamilton: A few things: the story written by James Cameron, the pleasure of reuniting with my friend Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the joy of playing Sarah Connor again at 63, assuming I have wrinkles and white hair! Together with the young players, Arnold and I, we have formed a close-knit team. We encouraged each other to be successful in our stunts. First, I slide into the open hatch behind a free-falling cargo plane. The set agitated with hydraulic cylinders, and a cable attached to a harness hidden under my clothes pulled me at full speed. Sliding on the ground, I had to grab a gun, grab the edge of the hatch before it crashed, get back on the plane and fight! (Laughs) I hurt my elbows, but at the end of filming, “Let’s do it again!” I said. », like a child asking the merry-go-round for another round!

It must be very scary to play the scene where you find yourself underwater, at night and in the cockpit of an armored vehicle…

I confirm this. I learned apnea and scuba diving techniques at night, without light, to have correct reflexes, with a regulator and an air bottle to help me, even if a person responsible for my safety was nearby. Another was placed at my feet, but as soon as the water entered the cabin, it jumped out of my reach! My partner Natalia Reyes and I had repeated ear infections because we stayed at the aquarium, and the chlorine irritated our eyes. Every evening a doctor came to examine me! Our bodies were falling apart because we are not Terminators!

Sigourney Weaver and you two strong and brave women have become world icons of science fiction cinema, playing Ellen Ripley in Alien and Sarah Connor in The Terminator. How has this role changed in your life?

During the filming of the first movie in the franchise in 1984, the boundary between Sarah and me sometimes blurred. One evening, when my husband and I were just getting back to our parked car in a parking lot, a vehicle hit us before we could flee. We chased him and stopped him. I got out of the car and threw myself at this man who was trying to get him out of his car through the door window! Sarah Connor came to take care of this person despite me! (Laughs) It was different when we were shooting Terminator 2, I found my 1-year-old baby at home in the evening and all the character’s aggression flew away.

Do you think you contributed to the creation of strong female roles in Hollywood with this cult character?

Some people said so. When these films came out, I felt that it had a special resonance. It was the right time to change something.
