With the National Weather Service Warning (Capitals of them) “DANGEROUS LIFE-THREATENING FLOODING in southern Santa Barbara County,” Montecito homeowner Ellen DeGeneres put her own exclamation point on the situation, posting a video of herself with raging flood directly over her shoulder, and captioned it, “That stream next to our house never, never flows. It’s probably about three feet high. It could get another half a meter high. We’ve got horses ready for evacuation.”
She captioned the post: “Montecito is under forced evacuation. We are on higher ground so they asked us to shelter in place.
DeGeneres was referring to the deadly flooding and accompanying mudslides that hit Montecito five years ago today, leaving 23 dead.
“It’s crazy, on the fifth anniversary. We have unprecedented rain.”

DeGeneres isn’t the only longtime resident of the leafy enclave south of Santa Barbara. Oprah, Gwyneth Paltrow, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Drew Barrymore, Jeff Bridges, Rob Lowe, Malcolm McDowell, Al Gore, Megyn Price, Eric Schmidt, Jane Seymour, Patrick Stewart and Kathy Ireland are also residents.
Not long after DeGeneres posted the video, local emergency workers announced that the 101 was now closed in several locations, effectively stopping northbound traffic into Santa Barbara and also northbound traffic out of the county. A declaration of the state of emergency is likely soon, another said, and a “signed state of emergency will soon be handed over to regulators”.
