How many hours did you put on makeup to transform you?
Javier Bardem: two days! It was actually three hours a day. Not too big: I know women who last longer! Makeup artist wins an Oscar Mad Max: Fury Road in 2016. I started at 5am but it was worth it, the result is great.
Another bad role. How do you manage to be scarier each time?
When I was 6 years old I bought an old spellbook on the subject! Kidding aside, I’ve only played three bad guys in my twenty-five year career, even if people tell me that’s all I do! In No country for old people, Downpour and finally, Captain Salazar Pirates of the Caribbean. I pictured him as a wounded bull about to crash in the arena, but driven by the fixed idea of killing Jack Sparrow. As with all people who experience anger, there is pain in them.
Is it true that you got the part because your wife Penélope Cruz was in the previous episode?
Not at all. But when I came to see him on set, I could see the build quality, the attention Jerry Bruckheimer showed to everyone on set, not just his stars. The urge to take the time was intrigued by me. When you called me, I knew you would be very kind. Having time is often more valuable than money.
What do you think of Salazar?
Victoria Abril says that each actor is the defender of his character. We have to defend it, even if it means setting aside our ethical values. For me, Salazar is the proud representative of a then very powerful Spanish military caste. He was eaten by a 16-year-old boy named Jack Sparrow and it drove him crazy.
What is it like working with Johnny Depp?
It’s a pleasure: Johnny is a gentleman. He’s a great comedian, with a Buster Keaton level clown in him. I’m sure we’ll review his game in the future: The way he uses his body is phenomenal. It’s a pleasure to see her become the Sparrow, she’s also so free, fun and deep. Sometimes it was very difficult to play, I was very surprised.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge airs Sunday, April 24 at 9:10 PM on M6
