How fortunate that the Grosvenor Hotel in Stockbridge has received a much-anticipated bite 200 years after the Grosvenor family first opened its doors to guests.
Her passion for hunting, fishing and horse racing remains a focal point in this Hampshire town, and as such she remains a draw for those looking for a country pursuit.
Henderson’s family and friends, locals who moved here just before lockdown, have done a good job of making it more than just another country hotel. Who likes muted colors and shabby ruffles?
Not interior designer Lottie Keith, who has a real sense of fun; she took the social history of the Grosvenor and gave it free rein with vibrant colors and prints; but not overwhelming or intimidating.

You might meet the locals with a newspaper on deep velvet sofas in The Danebury Room, where you’ll find a fireplace, jazz soundtrack and parquet floors.
Owner Simon Henderson says it should be the only hotel in town that offers a place to enjoy a glamorous dining experience.
Step into the River Room Bar, where accents of raspberry pink and cherry red take center stage.
The Hampshire smoked chicken and steak were excellent, as was the truffle and the blue barkham macaroni cheese.
Spread across the 34 rooms are four individually-sized suites (one with a freestanding bath at the end of the bed). Each room has Elemis toiletries, richly upholstered headboards and heavy curtains.

Garden rooms are best suited for people with dogs, who are very welcome. Here, the bold decor continues with bold shades of blue and coral — even on the ceiling.
But don’t rule out The Tap Cottage. It contains three en-suite double bedrooms, ideal for families looking for a retreat.
Weather permitting, guests flock to the walled garden and lavender-fringed terrace, where you can quietly sip tea in the corner or gather as a group to sample the wood-fired flatbreads or tapas.

With winter nights, nature moves to La Hutte. This wood-paneled room also has fur rugs, fairy lights and fondue for a real après-ski experience. The next morning, the refreshing soft green walls of the enormous Market Room Restaurant, decorated with chandeliers and fresh flowers, wake you up for breakfast. You can browse the buffet or enjoy an excellent full English breakfast and heart-warming coffee.
Stockbridge may be England’s smallest town, but the Test and Itchen rivers are renowned for offering some of the best Chalk Stream fly fishing in the world. Beginners can book a lesson or buy bread bags to feed the fish and hang out along the river.
If you have experience stalking trout, you might want to order a hotel basket and spend a whole day with it. You can also browse the city’s independent boutiques and visit one of the lively local cafes – or simply stay and enjoy a massage or manicure in The Grosvenor’s treatment shed.
