A man has sparked a debate about airplane etiquette after he revealed a mother yelled at him for watching a rated movie on his phone that made her son cry.

The 19-year-old, who kept his identity anonymous, detailed his awkward in-flight interaction with the disgruntled passenger in a post on Reddit’s “Am I The A **hole?” Forum.

The teenager explained that he flew to his parents and downloaded some movies on his smartphone, including the 2018 film Deadpool 2. Superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds.

“I was watching it on my phone with headphones when the part where Deadpool is torn in half happened and I heard a (muffled) scream behind me,” he wrote.

“I grab my headphones and there’s a little kid behind me crying. He positioned himself so he could look at my screen and watch him being abused.”

Not only was the child upset, but the boy’s mother also accused the man of watching the R-rated film on his personal device.

“His mother got mad at me and yelled at me not to watch things like that, especially in front of children,” he recalls.

“But I didn’t know someone was watching me, and this boy had to force himself into this weird position to see the screen of my phone.”

The man later changed his message and explained that it was a six-hour afternoon flight and that the child in question was about six years old or younger.

“I honestly don’t know if the mother noticed [him watching my screen] and just let it slide until it backfires on her,” he added.

The Reddit user ended his post by asking if he made a mistake by watching a rated movie during the flight.

“So, am I an ass?” he asked.

Many also agreed that the mother was to blame as she should have been watching her son.

“She should have looked after her own child.” She was glad he was taken [until] It failed and we decided to shift the blame,” one person responded.

Some people pointed out that the child was not sitting next to him, others argued that it did not matter where he was on the run.

The man explained in the comments that his awkward interaction with the mother was quickly diffused by a flight attendant.

“I’m not really a confrontational person, so I didn’t tell her much other than my reasoning,” he wrote. “And because there was shouting, a flight attendant came and after a little chat the situation was resolved.”
